Noting Dick & Joanne's 7 red-breasted mergansers at Grant Brook and the several  
other sightings the past few weeks I think it's important to say that until very  
recently they were a rarity on the Connecticut even during migration.

I birded constantly in the Upper Valley in the late 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's,  
and 70's and the only red-breasted mergansers I ever saw were on the coast.
