Last week I rejoiced to hear and see the first Redwings of the season. This
week, not so much. Most of the day there is a mass of Grackles, Red Wings,
Brown-headed Cowbirds and a few Starlings, but they are busy building their
nest ALREADY. They seem to be discouraging my little song birds. However,
yesterday and today there was/is one plucky Song Sparrow and yesterday two
Robins out there. Still a few Juncos and Tree Sparrows come when the black
masses are off digesting so they can attack again. The fox still comes at
night and now has to climb up on the feeders to see if there is a morsel
left. I threw out some cat food last night and hope he got some of it to
stave off starvation. Judging by the odor this am, it may be the friendly
skunks that got most of it.
Ah the joys and trials of a back yard bird feeder.
