This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, February 9th, 
2011.



A SPOTTED TOWHEE has been visiting a birdfeeder at a private residence in 
Peterborough for about 1-month, and was last reported on February 6th.



A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was reported from the Merrimack River near the 
Waumbec Mill in Manchester during the past week. Also seen on the Merrimack 
River in Manchester and Hooksett during the past week were more than 4 GREAT 
CORMORANTS, several HOODED MERGANSERS, and several BALD EAGLES.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported from the Society for the Protection of New 
Hampshire Forests land in Concord on February 6th, and one was seen near the 
intersection of Route 16 and Depot Street in North Conway on February 2nd.



A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, and 
a GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Seabrook in the parking area located just south 
of the Route 1A bridge, both on February 7th.



4 ICELAND GULLS and a possible LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were seen at the 
Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on February 8th. The treatment plant is 
gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, 
please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant 
personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and 
do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the 
plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.



A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was reported from Nottingham on February 9th, 2 
were seen in Hancock on the 7th, and one was seen in Strafford on the 3rd.



9 COMMON REDPOLLS was seen on George Street on February 6th, and 11 were 
seen near the Gate City Monument on the 5th, all in Nashua.



Up to 40 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen visiting a bird feeder in Strafford 
during the past week.



A flock of 56 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and 7 CEDAR WAWINGS was seen on Main Street 
in Rochester on February 8th. A flock of 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and 30 CEDAR 
WAXWINGS was seen near Horseshoe Pond on Commercial Street in Concord on 
February 7th, and 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Strafford on the 2nd.



A flock of 150 CEDAR WAXWINGS was seen in downtown Nashua on February 6th.



A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen with an estimated 150 SNOW BUNTINGS and 150 
HORNED LARKS behind the Agway Store in Walpole during the past week and 
these same birds have also been seen in the fields along River Road between 
Walpole and Westmoreland. If you want to view the birds at the Agway, please 
request permission from the management to study the flock.



7 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at the Harris Center in Hancock on February 8th, 
and 40 were seen on Hampton Beach on the 7th.



10 HORNED LARKS were reported from Durham on February 5th.



An AMERICAN COOT was seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on February 
2nd.



A female NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on 
February 7th.



A BLACK GUILLEMOT was reported from Rye Harbor on February 6th.



53 PURPLE SANDPIPERS and 17 SANDERLINGS were seen at Rye Ledge on the coast 
on February 7th.



An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was seen along Route 1A in Odiorne Point State Park 
in Rye on February 4th.



2 MERLINS and 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS continued to be reported from Nashua 
during the past week. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Concord on February 
5th.



A TURKEY VULTURE was reported from Nashua on February 6th.



A GRAY JAY was reported from near the summit of Wildcat Mountain on February 
3rd.



A HERMIT THRUSH was reported from Lempster on February 4th.



A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen in Goffstown on February 4th.



5 REDWING BLACKBIRDS were reported from Rye on February 5th.



There were several reports of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, CAROLINA WRENS, and 
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS during the past week.
