Hi Brian,
Solved the mystery! A couple of weeks ago my Safari decided to stop showing the URL and the Search windows. Via Bookmarks I downloaded a fresh Safari from the Apple site. I did not pay attention to the version number, thinking that I would automatically get the latest version; wrong it seems.
Yes there was an update for my Canon printer.
