Having nothing else to do but sit around after having foot surgery, I've positioned my chair to face the bird feeder... just saw the male red-bellied woodpecker that has been visiting my feeder since last fall. I'm thrilled he is still around - I haven't seen him for a couple of months.

Subject: [UVB] Red-bellied Woodpecker in South Peacham

South Peacham, Vermont
21 May 2010

I just returned from a walk and heard the familiar "chrrrr" call of a Red-bellied Woodpecker in front of my South Peacham home. I say familiar because I moved here from Houston Tx in February and I had a Red-bellied family living in my back yard there.

After hearing it call, I got a good look and am certain on the ID - zebra back, bright red back of head.

I have never seen one so far north and never in Peacham/Northern Vermont.
