This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for January 16, covering the period
January 9 - 15, 2009.
The birding highlights of the week include a MERLIN in Panton on 1/10 and in
Middlebury on 1/12 and 1/13 as well as the continued presence of the
NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Eden, last sighted 1/15.
Two COMMON LOONS were seen in the southern part of Lake Champlain on 1/10.
A RING-NECKED DUCK was spotted on Lake Wantastiquet in Vernon on 1/10. Two
LESSER SCAUP were sighted off Charlotte Town Beach on 1/10, along with large
numbers of HORNED GREBES (52) and COMMON GOLDENEYES (2,500).
AMERICAN KESTRELS were observed in Charlotte, Whiting and Ferrisburg on
1/10.
PEREGRINE FALCONS were spotted in Burlington (1 on 1/10), Ferrisburg (2 on
1/10) and in the southern part of Lake Champlain (2 on 1/10).
Four juvenile ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Intervale Compost area in
Burlington on 1/10 and one was seen on Grand Isle (Kumlien's) on 1/12. A
juvenile GLAUCOUS GULL was spotted at the Burlington Waterfront on 1/10 and
near the South Hero Causeway on 1/11.
A SNOWY OWL was last seen on 1/12 along Park Road, 100 feet past the Dorset
Street intersection in South Burlington on 1/12.
BELTED KINGFISHERS were seen in Winhall (1), Meach Cove, Shelburne (1) and
in southern Lake Champlain (1) on 1/10.
A NORTHERN FLICKER's rattling call was heard at the Charlotte Town Beach on
1/16.
There were several CEDAR WAXWING sightings this week, with the biggest flock
of 180, seen in Brattleboro on 1/10. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in
Burlington (100), South Burlington (30), Essex Junction (30) and Burlington
(50) this week.
PINE GROSBEAKS were sighted in South Starksboro (3) and Huntington (2) on
1/10.
A RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD has been coming to a feeder in Danby for over a week
and was last reported 1/12.
Six RED CROSSBILLS were seen in Eden on 1/11. There have been several
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL sightings this week: Eden (6), Grand Isle (5), South
Burlington (20, 2) and Winhall (8).
