This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for November 14, covering the period
November 7 - 13, 2008.  

 

The birding highlights of the week include a PACIFIC LOON spotted on 11/8 at
the South Hero end of the Colchester Causeway, in the bay to the right as
you drive in.  The last sighting of a PACIFIC LOON in Vermont occurred in
May, 2005.  There were two separate sightings (at different times) of a
first year female SNOWY OWL flying over Lake Champlain near Charlotte on
11/12.

 

As of 11/14 there were 3,500 SNOW GEESE at Dead Creek WMA.  Three CACKLING
GEESE were spotted in Shelburne Bay on 11/8 along with a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.  A BRANT was seen in Shelburne Bay on 11/7 - 11/10.
Two female RUDDY DUCKS were seen at Colchester Pond Natural Area 11/7 -
11/9.

 

Two PURPLE SANDPIPERS were observed off the Colchester Causeway on 11/10, 19
were spotted on 11/11 and 4 were seen from Grand Isle on 11/12.

 

SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at Dead Creek WMA (7 on 11/9 and 3 on 11/7) and
off the Colchester Causeway (1 on 11/12).

 

Five GRAY JAYS were spotted in North Pomfret on 11/8.

 

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in Monkton (4 on 11/8), South Burlington
(12 on 11/9) and Norwich (2 on 11/10).
