This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, August 21st,
2008.
3 MISSISSIPPI KITES are regularly being seen in Newmarket. There is a pair
that is nesting, and they are feeding one chick. To see the birds, take
Route 152 (South Main Street) west from the center of Newmarket. You will
see the High School on the left (south) side of the road. Park at the High
School and walk west down the street. Do not park in driveways, or along
Route 152. The KITES have been seen flying and landing in the tops of trees
between Maplecrest and Pond Streets. This is a residential neighborhood, and
visiting birders should respect the rights of property owners. Please do not
walk on private property, including lawns, talk and laugh loudly early in
the morning, or block residents from using the sidewalk. Also, take care not
to alarm the birds. Do not play recordings, stand under the nest, or harass
the birds in any way.
There was an unconfirmed report of a WESTERN TANAGER in Epping on August
16th.
A BLACK TERN was seen at the north end of the Edward MacDowell Lake in
Peterborough on August 19th.
2 CORYS SHEARWATERS and 100 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were seen on a Granite
State Whalewatch cruise out of Rye Harbor on August 18th.
28 ROSEATE TERNS and a HUDSONIAN GODWIT were seen in Hampton Harbor on
August 16th.
A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen in the Little River Saltmarsh in North Hampton
on August 17th.
A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on
August 19th.
A WHIMBREL was seen atop Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on August 17th.
46 RUDDY TURNSTONES were seen along the cast in Rye on August 15th.
A HORNED GREBE continues to be seen in Rye just south of Odiorne Point State
Park.
An immature BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen in Rye Harbor on August 15th
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen at the Pease International Tradeport near the
Pease Golf Course on August 20th.
COMMON NIGHTHAWK migration has started with several sightings reported
during the past week, including 225 in Keene on August 17th.
A COMMON TERN, several BONAPARTE'S GULLS, a few GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, numerous BOREAL CHICKADEES, several PHILADELPHIA
VIREOS, and a small number of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported from
Pittsburg between August 8th and 15th.
Several OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS, and VESPER SPARROWS
were reported from scattered locations during the past week..
