This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, February 28th, 
2008.



A pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYES was seen from the south side of Great Boar's 
Head in Hampton on February 24th.



2 SNOW GEESE and 475 GREATER SCAUP were reported from Great Bay on February 
24th.



A BLACK-HEADED GULL, and at least 3 ICELAND GULLS and a GLAUCOUS GULL were 
all reported from the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant during the past 
week. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 
on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the 
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. 
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering 
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during 
daylight hours.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on 
February 27th.



3 BLACK GUILLEMOTS were seen from Little Boar's Head in North Hampton on 
February 24th, and 19 SANDERLINGS were seen in Rye on the 25th.



7 LAPLAND LONSPURS and 35 HORNED LARKS were seen in the Pease Golf Course 
Parking lot in Portsmouth on February 24th. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 90 HORNED 
LARKS were seen on River Road South in Walpole on February 21st.



6 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen in Durham on February 27th.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE, 30 PINE GROSBEAKS, 30 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 15 EVENING 
GROSBEAKS were reported from the Milan/Dummer area on February 22nd.



NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings during the past week included at least 10 
different birds from scattered locations.



PINE GROSBEAK sightings during the past week included 15 in Durham on 
February 26th, 30 in Plymouth on the 25th, a 10 in East Kingston on the 
24th, and 30 in Hanover on the 22nd.



EVENING GROSBEAK sightings during the past week included 20 in Jefferson on 
February 28th, and 20 in Greenfield on the 26th.



COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week included several large flocks 
as well as small groups from scattered locations.



BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included 8 in Marlborough on 
February 27th, 100 in Newport on the 27th, 85 in Alstead Center on the 26th, 
60 in Plymouth on the 25th, 30 in Hanover on the 22nd, and 36 in Center 
Barnstead on the 22nd.



A GREATER SCAUP, 5 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 191 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 52 HOODED 
MERGANSERS, 45 COMMON MERGANSERS, 72 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 294 MALLARDS, 5 
MUTE SWANS, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 2 HORNED LARKS, and 20 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS 
were all seen on or near the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on February 23rd.



TURKEY VULTURE sightings during the past week included 1 in Stratham on 
February 25th, 1 in Nashua on the 24th, and 1 in East Derry on the 23rd.



There were a few reports of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS during the past week.



A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was seen in East Derry on February 23rd, and a HERMIT 
THRUSH was seen in Exeter on the 22nd.



5 GRAY JAYS were reported from Mount Pierce in Crawford Notch on February 
24th, and 2 GRAY JAYS, and a BOREAL CHICKADEE were reported from Errol on 
the 21st.



During the past week there have been several reports of BARRED OWLS. Many of 
these sightings are from during the day, and are probably migrants from 
Canada moving south in search of food. Apparently the rodent population has 
crashed where these birds normally live.
