This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for February 4, 2008 covering the period
January 29 - February 3, 2008.

 

Highlights this week include more sightings of the SNOW GOOSE in Shelburne
Bay (1/28 and 1/29) as well as the MUTE SWANS -- 5 juveniles on 1/30 and 2/3
at the Grand Isle Ferry Landing as well as 7 on Lake Wantastiquet in Vernon
on 2/2 and 2/3; a NORTHERN PINTAIL drake at the Colchester Railroad Causeway
on 2/3 and 5 on Lake Wantastiquet in Vernon on 2/3; 2 male REDHEAD drakes
near the South Hero Causeway on 1/28, 2/2 and 2/3; two HARLEQUIN DUCKS, an
adult drake and a 1st winter drake as well as a female LONG-TAILED DUCK at
Shelburne Point on 1/28; a GREAT GRAY OWL in South Ryegate on 1/28 that
stayed for two days; an adult YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in Vergennes and
Middlebury on 1/28 as well as an immature bird in Centennial Woods in
Burlington on 1/31. 

 

One COMMON LOON was seen at the Grand Isle Ferry Landing on 1/30; 2 were
seen at Meach Cove and 8 at Charlotte Town Beach on 2/3.  

 

Two-hundred and forty LESSER SCAUP were sighted off the South Hero Causeway
on 2/3.  Two BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were observed off the South Hero Causeway
on 2/3.  RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were spotted near the Grand Isle ferry
landing on 1/28 (1), 1/29 (3) and on 1/31.  A female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER
was also seen on 1/28 along the South Hero Causeway and 2 were seen at
Shelburne Beach on 2/3. 

 

Nineteen BALD EAGLES (16 adult) were observed at the Sandbar Causeway on
1/31.  An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen at Shelburne Beach on 2/3.

 

ICELAND GULLS were sighted at the Sandbar Causeway (1 juvenile) on 1/28,
1/29 (1), 1/31 (8) and 2/2 (4) and 2/3 (2).  GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen at
Sandbar State Park on 1/29 (1), 1/31 (5) and 2/2 (3), at the Grand Isle
Ferry Landing on 1/31 (1) and at the South Hero Causeway on 2/3 (1).

 

A NORTHERN FLICKER was spotted in Brandon on 2/1, 2/2 and 2/3 and in
Charlotte on 2/3.

 

Several flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen this week, with the largest
(70, 55 and 150) in Brandon.  CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen as well, with large
flocks in Weybridge (70), South Hero (70) and Manchester Center (65).

 

There were several SNOW BUNTING sightings, including 300-400 in East
Enosburg. 

 

Five towns reported PINE GROSBEAKS this week.

 

COMMON REDPOLL sightings continue to be made throughout the state in good
numbers.
