This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for December 3, 2007 covering the period
November 26 - December 2, 2007.

 

Highlights this week include the GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE which was still
at Minard's Pond in Bellows Falls on 11/30, a drake HARLEQUIN DUCK in
Shelburne on 12/2 (one was last seen at this site on 11/24) and two
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS in Brattleboro on 12/2. 
 
A DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was spotted on the Connecticut River on 11/30
between Vernon and Brattleboro.
 
A GADWALL was observed at Brattleboro Retreat Meadows on 11/30.
 
NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen in Waitsfield (2), Johnson, Canaan, Post Mills,
Charlotte and Shelburne.
 
BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings were numerous this week:  Poultney (30), Derby,
Jericho (19), Essex (2, 40), Rutland (17), Lyndonville (100), Norwich (95),
Waitsfield (10), North Ferrisburg, Grand Isle (95), Fairlee (35) and Post
Mills (3-5).  Forty-five CEDAR WAXWINGS were observed in Brattleboro, 150 in
Bennington, 50 in West Brattleboro and 140 at Herrick's Cove.
 
Five CHIPPING SPARROWS were sighted in Rutland on 11/27.
 
LAPLAND LONGSPURS are starting to appear: 1 was seen in Vernon on 12/1 and 2
on 12/2.
 
The irruption of PINE GROSBEAKS continues, with sightings in Vernon,
Colchester, Derby, St. Albans, Waitsfield, Brandon, Essex, Bristol, Moretown
Village, Johnson, Brattleboro, Bennington, Montgomery Center, Plainfield,
Proctor, Warren, Rutland, Irasville, Lincoln and Dorset.
 
Two RED CROSSBILLS were spotted in Manchester Center on 12/2.
 
Three WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at Moose Bog on 11/30.
 
There were over 70 sightings of COMMON REDPOLLS this week, ranging from
Manchester Center in southern Vermont to Canaan in the north.
