This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, September
27th, 2007.
A SABINE'S GULL, a LONG-TAILED JAEGER, an ATLANTIC PUFFIN, a MANX
SHEARWATER, 8 GREATER SHEARWATERS, and a possible PARASITIC JAEGER were all
seen on a whale watch out of Rye Harbor on September 22nd. The SABINE'S GULL
was seen in NH waters, but some of the others were seen in Maine waters.
Seen on the same whale watch boat the next day were 36 GREATER SHEARWATERS
and 2 MANX SHEARWATERS, and a rare BLUE WHALE!
2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and 8 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen at Pease
International Tradeport near the Pease Golf Course on September 25th.
14 CASPIAN TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor on September 25th.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 6 LAUGHING GULLS, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 6
CASPIAN TERNS, 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS, and a SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW
were all reported from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on September 22nd.
A DICKCISSEL was seen at the Concord Community Gardens on Birch Street, off
of Route 13, on September 26th.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, a COMMON MOORHEN, and a CAPE MAY WARBLER were seen
at the setbacks on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on September 24th.
Nearly 7,000 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were seen leaving a roost in the
reed-beds here on September 25th.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, a CLIFF SWALLOW, a BROWN
THRASHER, 2 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, a CAPE MAY WARBLER, and 2 PINE SISKINS were
seen on Star Island in Rye on September 23rd.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on
September 24th.
8 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were seen in the fields
next to Horseshoe Pond in Concord on September 20th. 2 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen in fields along East Conway Road in Conway on the
21st.
A GREATER SCAUP and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were seen at the Rochester Waste
Water Treatment Plant on September 25th. 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were present on
the 22nd. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at
Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated and are always
open during daylight hours.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in Squam Lake in Holderness on September 21st.
29 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen in the farm fields near River Street in East
Conway on September 22nd.
A RED CROSSBILL was seen on Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on September
25th.
A female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen near Round Pond in Pawtuckaway
State Park in Nottingham on September 22nd. Also present were 4 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS.
5 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen migrating along the coast in Rye on September
23rd, and 5 were seen at Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge on the 21st.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen at Turkey Pond in Concord on September 23rd.
HAWK migration is under way with 8,890 raptors reported from the Pack
Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough since September 1st.
Be sure to visit the observatory to help out with the count!
