Position General Purpose
Provide leadership and coordination for all aspects of foreign
language teaching and learning across the university. As Yale's
senior adviser on foreign language study, develop and implement
coordinated, long-term strategies in related areas. Promote community
and collaboration in all areas of language teaching on campus. Serve
as chief advisor to other university administrators on foreign
language programs, faculty, and curricula, as well as national and
international trends and developments. Offer direction and oversight
for language study opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and
professional school students. Ensure that the mission and operation
of support services for foreign language faculty and students are
effective and consistent with the vision and mission of the university.
Essential Duties
1. Exercising broad vision and wide latitude for independent
judgment, direct the Center for Language Study (CLS) at highest
level. Establish long-term plans and strategic framework for CLS
activities. Ensure CLS activities support and further larger goals of
language study at Yale. Guide CLS, connecting its work with the rest
of Yale and of postsecondary language education in the U.S. and abroad.
2. Advise Provost's Office on matters pertaining to language study,
including needs for programs, personnel, financial and other
resources, and use of technology in teaching. Independently and in
coordination with the Provost's Language Study Committee (LSC),
advise the Provost and Deans of Yale College, the Graduate School of
Arts and Sciences, and Professional Schools on matters pertaining to
language programs and language learning.
3. With the Chair of LSC, coordinate LSC activities. Assist Chair in
setting agenda, conducting meetings, and implementing outcomes. Draft
conclusions, reports & recommendations made by the committee;
represent the committee to other university parties. Identify
priorities and key issues for committee attention.
4. Consult on searches for and periodic review of foreign language
faculty. Advise Chairs and Language Program Directors when filling
vacancies. With members of the LSC, Chairs, and Language Program
Directors, review of certain language programs.
5. With CLS staff, initiate and oversee activities to support
professional status and development of language faculty and students.
6. Conduct seminars, lectures, presentations. Lead workshops for
current faculty on pedagogical issues and new technologies/methods.
Create opportunities for those interested in language instruction to
share ideas/concerns. Conduct pedagogical training for graduate
student instructors and new faculty. Serve as sounding board and
mentor to Language Program Directors and other language faculty.
7. Advise students on academic regulations such as the Yale College
Foreign Language Requirement and incorporation of language study into
educational plans. Work closely with others on campus that advise and
mentor students.
8. Identify priorities and specific opportunities for new
grant-funded projects. Write/edit grant proposals; oversee
development of proposal content by others. Serve as Principal
Investigator on outside grants. Advise the Development Office and
others on pertinent fundraising and development initiatives.
9. Serve on variety of standing/special committees. Advise committees
in other areas upon request. Serve on review committees for
fellowships and internal grant applications.
10. Build collaborations among departments, councils, and other
offices to support integration of the study of language and culture
in the curriculum. Establish/maintain ties with relevant university
offices, programs, and alumni associations. Work with the MacMillan
Center for International and Areas Studies on campus-wide activities
as well as with the U.S. Department of Education. Develop
collaborative strategies to support study in less commonly taught
languages and study of language for special and professional purposes.
11. Primary representative/liaison to the internal language education
community. Promote awareness of foreign language activities and
participate in public discussions on issues of national interest.
Offer commentary, advice, and leadership as appropriate in fields of
Language Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, Teacher Education,
and Language Learning Technology, and bring relevant items to
interested faculty/staff. Monitor/participate in listservs and other
online discussions. Liaison to professional organizations such as MLA
and ADFL, AAAL, AAUSC, ACTFL, the National Foreign Language Center,
government language schools, and major graduate programs in applied
linguistics and language pedagogy. Represent Yale on the Governing
Board of the Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning.
Education and Experience
1. PhD in related field and five years of experience in higher
education administration or program direction, or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.
2. Experience with and involvement in national or international
professional activities pertaining to this field.
3. Demonstrated teaching or language training experience.
4. Experience in the evaluation of language programs and faculty.
5. Prior supervisory experience.
6. PREFERRED: Experience as an officer or leader in relevant
professional organizations; experience developing, reviewing, or
implementing multimedia instructional materials.
Skills & Abilities
1. Knowledge of language pedagogy and principles of teacher training.
Knowledge of principles associated with assessment, as well
as test-, course- and curriculum- development
2. Knowledge of theory and research in the field of Second Language
Acquisition.
3. Familiarity with language program oversight practices at other institutions.
4. Significant interest in and knowledge of topics in Computer
Assisted Language Learning.
5. Highly developed writing and editing skills. Highly developed oral
communication, presentation, and negotiating skills.
6. Highly developed interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to
create networks of people and foster collaborations.
7. Fluency in English. Proficiency in at least one foreign language,
preferably at an advanced or near-native level.
8. PREFERRED: Formal publication history on such topics as Second
Language Acquisition, teacher training, the role and status of
language faculty, or the innovative use of technology in language study.
