I've had an interesting past couple of days, bird-wise. First thing Friday morning (7am), as I was walking into the VA hospital, I saw a flash of a hawk fly into a large evergreen tree on the property right next to the building. As I turned back to look, I saw two songbirds high-tail it out of the tree. I waited for a few seconds to see if the hawk would emerge, but had to get into the building. All I saw of the hawk was a strongly banded black and white tail. Coopers or sharp-shinned?
On Saturday morning, I saw a hawk perched in the trees in the median of I-91 South just before the Windsor exit. On my return trip headed North, I saw a hawk (same?), sitting in a tree on the side of the interstate. A few miles later, as I approached the I-91 and I-89 interchange, I spotted a HUGE bird flying low over the median. The wingspan was enormous! My first thought was Osprey, but they don't winter here, do they? I saw it totally from underneath - it was mainly white, with dark patches. I've never seen an eagle in flight, so can't compare it to that. Any ideas??
