This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, April 23rd, 
2009.



A SNOWY OWL was seen in Seabrook near the Yankee Fisherman's Coop on Route 
1A on April 18th, and again on the 21st.



An adult-plumaged GOLDEN EAGLE was seen in Exeter on April 18th.



A SANDHILL CRANE has returned to Monroe, where it has spent the breeding 
season for the last 10+ years running. It flies up from its roost on the 
Connecticut River early in the day and spends most of the day among the cows 
on the left side of Plains Road in the first fields that you come to. 
Sometimes it is found on the Vermont side of the river.



A SNOW GOOSE was seen on the Connecticut River in Lyme on April 16th, and 
one was seen in Rochester on the 21st.



2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen in Hampton Harbor on April 23rd, and 2 
NORTHERN SHOVELERS and 10 LESSER SCAUP were seen on Eel Pond in Rye on April 
17th.



19 BRANT were seen form Bicentennial Park in Hampton, and 24 BLACK SCOTERS, 
over 150 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 10 NORTHERN GANNETS, and 19 COMMON LOONS were 
reported off of Hampton Beach, all on April 23rd.



4 AMERICAN WIGEON were seen on Great Bay on April 18th.



200 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen in Meadow Pond in 
Hampton on April 18th.



6 PIED-BILLED GREBES were seen at the Deer Hill Wildlife Management Area in 
Brentwood on April 18th.



Spring hawk-migration is underway with scattered sightings of raptors 
throughout the state, including 139 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 14 OSPREYS, 5 
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 4 COOPER'S HAWKS, and an AMERICAN KESTREL reported from 
Powdermill Pond in Hancock on April 20th.



12 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in North Hampton on April 17th.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from Hampton Harbor on April 23rd.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on 
April 21st. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be 
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders 
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. An ICELAND 
GULL was also reported from Moore fields in Durham on the 21st.



A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen along Worthley Road in Seabrook on 
April 18th.



An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen in Croydon on April 22nd, and one was seen at 
Pudding Pond in North Conway on the 18th.



2 FISH CROWS were reported from Hampton Beach State Park, and 2 were seen at 
the Plymouth State University field house, all on April 21st.



2 PIPING PLOVERS were seen at Seabrook Town Beach on April 20th.



A SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was seen in the pools at Landing Road in Hampton on 
April 23rd.



15 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at Great Bay Farm in Greenland on April 21st, 
and 4 WILSON'S SNIPE and a BROWN THRASHER were seen in Sandwich on April 
18th.



A SPOTTED SANDPIPER was seen at Goose Pond in Keene on April 17th.



A VIRGINIA RAIL was heard in Great Bog in Portsmouth on April 20th.



4 VESPER SPARROWS were seen at Morrill Farm in Penacook on April 19th.



2 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were reported in NH during the past week.



9 SPRUCE GROUSE were seen near the top of Sandwich Mountain on April 19th.



During the past week, 5 species of warbler were reported including NORTHERN 
WATERTHRUSH, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, PALM WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, and 
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, there have several reports of HERMIT THRUSH and one 
of WOOD THRUSH, a few BLUE-HEADED VIREOS have arrived, swallow species seen 
include NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED, BARN, and TREE, and a few migrating RUSTY 
BLACKBIRDS continue to be reported.
