This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for August 25, covering the period
August 18 - 24, 2008.  

 

The highlights of the week were 2 GLOSSY IBISES at Danby Pond on 8/23, a
WHIMBREL in a field off I-89 near St. Albans on 8/19, 2 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES at a pond along Goodrich Corner Road in Addison (2 on 8/22, 8/19
and 8/18) and BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES in Grand Isle (1 on 8/20, 1 on 8/19, 2
on 8/18)

 

The first large kettle of TURKEY VULTURES (42) was spotted near Middlebury
on 8/16.

 

Five SANDHILL CRANES (2 adults, 3 juveniles) were seen along Monkton Ridge
Road south of Hinesburg on 8/19.

 

Migrating shorebird sightings include:  KILLDEER (14 on 8/24 in Addison, 16
on 8/22 at Dead Creek, 4 on 8/18 at the Goodrich Corner Road pond in
Addison,); GREATER YELLOWLEGS (3 at Dead Creek on 8/22 and 8/24, 1 on Grand
Isle on 8/20); 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER in Addison; 11 LEAST SANDPIPERS at the
Goodrich Corner Road pond, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS in Grand Isle on 8/24 and 8
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS in Brandon on 8/24.

 

A LITTLE GULL was spotted in Grand Isle on 8/22.  A CASPIAN TERN was seen at
Brilyea Access at Dead Creek on 8/24 and 2 BLACK TERNS were observed in
Grand Isle on 8/25.

 

COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in Morrisville (1 on 8/24), Norwich (24 on
8/24), Hartland (3 on 8/24) and East Dorset (1 on 8/22).
