Had a wonderful 20 minutes observing a female northern harrier hunt in fields along the Pompy yesterday on the way back from dropping kids off at school.
It was interesting in that she appeared to be harrying the mallards who were dabbling in the beaver-raised waters there. The ducks didn't like it one bit. She never made a move to strike one of them, but she did feint a couple times. I’ve watched a lot of these hawks elsewhere in marshes, and never saw them react much to ducks before. I would have assumed the bird’s interest was another marsh creature that happened to be nearby, but the field was largely flooded. Pics follow. The second picture is the hawk feinting immediately above 4 mallards.
