Happy belated New Year from the farm!

I would like to share with you some of the more fun bird appearances here over the past several weeks. We have had a very industrious Pileated woodpecker carve out deep rectangular shapes up and down the trunk of a red maple. I will post some pictures of it on eBird. The series of rectangular carvings extend from the base of the truck up 10-12 feet. I expect the tree to come crashing down any day.

Yesterday, I was walking through the fields when I spied several Snow Buntings. Suddenly, I flushed the entire flock of 20-30 birds which fluttered straight up into the air and magically disappeared. I kid you not, I do not know in which direction they went. It was wonderful. They disappeared into the sun.

A week or so ago, as evening crept in to our yard and the sun was setting over Tug Mountain, a large Barred Owl flew in and perched on a sturdy branch and stared into the wetland. Occasionally, it would turn its head in an unnerving manner staring at us.

Finally and perhaps most fun, has been a steady flock of 6-10 Eastern Bluebirds enjoying the Sumacs along a fence row. I have seen them perched on many of our fence posts which guard our strawberries. I have seen them checking out their houses built by our Corinth friends. And I have seen them once here at our feeders where I have put out insect suet and hulled sunflower seed.

That’s all the excitement for now. The rest of the usual suspects are listed on eBird. Obviously, we have not been grooming our ski trails; however, you are invited to walk the trails and see what you see.

Happy New Year!
Tim
