This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, February 23rd,
2015.
A juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was discovered near the public boat launch
at Adams Point in Durham on November 10th. It has been seen numerous times
since then, and was last reported on February 23rd.
A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on February 21st. The SNOWY
OWL that had been seen regularly reported at Ragged Neck in Rye was last
reported on February 14th.
A female HARLEQUIN DUCK continues to be seen along the coast in Rye near
Concord Point and was last reported on February 21st.
A THICK-BILLED MURRE was seen off of Wallis Sands in Rye on February 18th,
and 1 was seen off of Concord Point in Rye on the 21st. 2 RAZORBILLS were
seen from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on February 21st.
A GLAUCOUS GULL and an ICELAND GULL were seen in Hampton Harbor on February
18th. 2 ICELAND GULLS were seen at Adam’s Point in Durham on the 18th.
A flock of 44 PURPLE SANDPIPERS was seen at Rye Ledge in Rye on February
21st.
2 male BARROW’S GOLDENEYES were seen on Great Bay from Adam’s Point in
Durham on February 22nd.
A pair of GADWALL was seen off of Fort Stark in Rye on February 21st.
2 male NORTHERN PINTAILS, a LESSER SCAUP, and a GREATER SCAUP were seen at
the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on February 22nd.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was again seen frequenting the Wendell Flat and Trask
Brook Road area in Sunapee on February 17th. It has usually been seen
between the snowmobile trail and Route 103, close to the intersection of
Depot Road.
A HOARY REDPOLL was reported from Marlborough on February 21st.
A flock of 120 COMMON REDPOLLS was seen in Jefferson on February 17th, a
flock of 80 was seen along Perimeter Road in Manchester on the 19th, a flock
of 30 was reported from Ashland on the 17th, and a flock of 28 was seen in
Sunapee on the 17th.
BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included: 180 along Owens
Drive in Littleton on February 17th, 100 in Berlin center on the 15th, 31 in
Orford on the 15th, 125 in Lyme on the 21st, 25 in Gorham on the 23rd, 15 on
East Milan Road in Berlin on the 21st, 34 in Sunapee on the 22nd, 5 at
Ragged Neck in Rye on the 21st, and 3 along Ocean Boulevard in Rye on the
18th. These flocks were seen mainly foraging on ornamental fruit tress, or
resting nearby.
A flock of 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS was seen along Chickwolnepy Road in Milan on
February 15th, a flock of 23 was seen in Lyman on the 16th, a flock of 9 was
seen in Jefferson the 17th, and 1 was seen at the Harris Center in Hancock
on the 20th.
Several RED CROSSBILLS were seen at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center
in Holderness on February 17th, and at least 1 was reported from Hancock on
the 19th.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 8 SNOW BUNTINGS, and 170 HORNED LARKS were reported from
the Agway parking lot in Walpole on February 21st.
A flock of 30 HORNED LARKS and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS was seen at the Exeter
Wastewater Treatment Facility on February 22nd, and a flock of 29 HORNED
LARKS was seen along Harbor Road in Rye on the 21st.
7 BALD EAGLES were reported from Great Bay on February 23rd.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Dover on February 17th, and 1 was seen at the
Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on the 22nd.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Derry on February 21st, and 1 was seen in
Exeter on the 18th.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Etna on February 20th, and 1 was seen in
Manchester on the 18th.
A COOPER’S HAWK was seen in Laconia on February 17th, 1 was seen in
Newmarket on the 18th, and several SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS were reported from
scattered locations during the past week.
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was seen in Berlin on February 19th, and 1 was seen
in Amherst on the 20th.
An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was seen in Nashua on the 21st.
A BARRED OWL was seen in Plymouth on the 23rd, 1 was seen in Lyme on the
17th, and 1 was seen in Gilsum on the 22nd.
A pair of GREAT HORNED OWLS was heard in Hillsborough County on the 18th.
A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Nashua on February 21st.
A FISH CROW was reported from Salem on February 18th.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Nashua on February 18th.
A NORTHERN FLICKER was seen in Bedford on February 17th, and 1 was seen at
Adam’s Point in Durham on the 18th.
A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in Orfordville on February 22nd.
3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were seen in Hancock on February 17th, 3 were seen in
Litchfield on the 22nd, and 12 were reported from Laconia on the 17th.
A flock of 15 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS was seen in Jefferson on February 17th.
2 GRAY JAYS were seen at the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge
Headquarters in Wentworth Location on February 22nd.
2 GRAY JAYS and 2 BOREAL CHICKADEES were reported from the Second College
Grant on February 22nd.
