This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, May 17th,
2007.
A breeding-plumaged PACIFIC LOON was seen from Pulpit Rocks in Rye on May
15th. It was seen in the company of several COMMON LOONS.
4 BLACK TERNS were seen at Jackman Pond in South Tamworth, and 4 BLACK TERNS
were seen on Squam Lake while looking out from the Sandwich Beach, all on
May 16th.
A BLUE GROSBEAK was seen in Bristol on May 7th and 8th.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen flying in North Hampton on May 16th.
A THICK-BILLED MURRE was seen off of Bicentennial Park in Hampton, and 4
possible RAZORBILLS were seen offshore in Rye, all on May 12th.
A flock of 28 BRANT, and a flock of 5 SNOWY EGRETS were both seen from
Pulpit Rocks in Rye, all on May 15th.
2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen at the Pease International Tradeport on May
12th, and one was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord on the 16th.
18 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at the Post Office fields on Loudon Road in
Concord on May 16th, and 9 were seen at Moore Fields on Route 155A in Durham
on the 12th.
3 FISH CROWS were reported from Rollins Park in Concord on May 14th, and one
was heard in Newmarket on the 12th. There was a report of a possible FISH
CROW in Lincoln on May 13th.
An AMERICAN COOT was seen at the Brentwood Mitigation Area on May 14th and
one was seen in Eel Pond in Rye on May 12th.
24 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen in Hampton Harbor, a WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER was reported from Henry's Pool in Hampton, and 245 PURPLE
SANDPIPERS were counted on the coast, all on May 15th.
2 SORAS were heard at the Brentwood Mitigation Area on May 12th.
A pair of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS was seen at Weeks State Park in Lancaster
on May 10th.
A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen in Newmarket on May 15th, and a WHIP-POOR-WILL
was heard in Jefferson on May 10th.
An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen at the Brentwood Mitigation Area on May 14th, and
on May 12th, one was reported from Newington Road in Greenland, and one was
seen at Powderhouse Pond in Exeter.
A GREAT EGRET was seen at Airport Marsh in Whitefield on May 14th.
A VESPER SPARROW was reported from McIntyre Road in Newington on May 12th.
There were scattered reports of small numbers of EVENING GROSBEAKS from
various locations during the past week.
Other new arrivals during the past week included: WILLOW FLYCATCHER, EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEE, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, MARSH WREN, VEERY,
SWAINSON'S THRUSH, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED
WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
A red-morph EASTERN SCREECH-OWL has been seen regularly in Greenland and was
last reported on May 15th. It has been seen near a driveway at 109
Portsmouth Avenue just north of the intersection with Newington Road. It
roosts in a large tree on the south side of the road, and can sometimes be
seen when looking northeast from southwest of the driveway. Be careful of
the traffic here.
