This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, October 26th,
2015.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen at World End Pond in Salem on October 23rd, single
GOLDEN EAGLES were seen from Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on the 23rd,
24th, and 25th, 3 were seen from Carter Hill in Concord on the 21st, and 1
was seen in Hancock on the 21st.
A CATTLE EGRET and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO were seen at Great Bay Farm in
Greenland on October 24th and 25th.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at Great Boar’s Head in Hampton on October
22nd.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at the Lebanon Airport on October 20th,
and 1 was seen adjacent to Hampton Marsh on the 21st.
A CORY’S SHEARWATER, 3 LAUGHING GULLS, and 2 RAZORBILLS were seen off the
coast in North Hampton on October 22nd, and several of each were seen again
on the 25th.
A male and a probable female EURASIAN WIGEON were seen on the Greenland side
of Great Bay on October 24th. Also present were 42 AMERICAN WIGEON. 2
NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen here on the 20th.
A CACKLING GOOSE was reported from Charlestown on October 24th, and 1 was
seen in Rochester on the 22nd, but neither has been relocated.
A flock of 30 SNOW GEESE was seen at the Sherman Farm fields in Conway on
October 24th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in
Jefferson on October 23rd.
25 COMMON REDPOLLS, 2 BOHEMIAN WAX WINGS, 40 RED CROSSBILLS, and 6 PINE
SISKINS were seen at Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on October 24th.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at Rye Harbor State Park on October 21st, and a
NELSON’S SPARROW was seen here on the 25th.
A PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 WILSON’S SNIPE, and 12 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were
reported from the Upper Suncook Recreation Area in Barnstead on October
24th.
2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant
on October 22nd, and a LEAST SANDPIPER, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 BLUE-WINGED
TEAL, an AMERICAN WIGEON, and 29 TURKEY VULTURES were seen here on the 19th.
The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on
weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave.
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during
daylight hours.
An AMERICAN COOT was seen at Eel Pond in Rye on October 24th.
2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and a GREATER SCAUP were seen at the Wilder Dam on the
Connecticut River on October 20, and 2 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on the river
on the 22nd.
33 BLACK SCOTERS, a RED-NECKED GREBE, 3 BONAPARTE’S GULLS, and a GREATER
YELLOWLEGS were seen at Lake Sunapee on October 21st.
2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen on Squam Lake on October 20th.
A BLACK SCOTER and a GADWALL were seen in Newport on October 24th.
3 BLACK SCOTERS were seen at Great Pond in Kingston, and 1 was seen at Lake
Massabesic in Auburn, all on October 26th.
3 GADWALL, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, and 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen in
Derry on October 21st.
A RUDDY DUCK and 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen at the Exeter Wastewater
Treatment Plant on October 24th.
54 HOODED MERGANSERS were seen at the Basin in North Chatham on October
22nd.
23 SNOW BUNTINGS, and 5 COMMON TERNS were seen at Seabrook Beach on October
24th, and 38 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Hampton Beach on the 26th.
15 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen on Mount Moosilauke in the White Mountains on
October 24th.
30 SNOW BUNTINGS and a BOREAL CHICKADEE were reported from the Franconia
Ridge Trail in the White Mountains on October 24th.
A late-migrating EMPIDONAX FLYCATCHER tentatively identified as a LEAST
FLYCATCHER was seen at Rye Harbor State Park on October 24th.
2 late-migrating BARN SWALLOWS were seen in Rye on October 25th, and 2 late
TREE SWALLOWS were seen at Eel Pond in Rye on the 26th.
A late-migrating HOUSE WREN was seen at Morrill’s Farm in Penacook on the
24th.
Late migrating WARBLERS reported during the past week included NASHVILLE,
CHESTNUT-SIDED, BLACK-AND-WHITE, NORTHERN PARULA, PINE, BLACKPOLL,
BLACK-THROATED BLUE, PALM, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
2 GRAY JAYS were seen on the Jackson/Webster trail in Crawford Notch in the
White Mountains on October 24th.
A flock of about 50 PINE SISKINS was seen at the Squam Lakes Natural Science
Center in Holderness on October 22nd.
There were several reports of AMERICAN PIPIT, HERMIT THRUSH, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, LINCOLN’S SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD
from scattered locations during the past week.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at Moore Fields in Durham on October 20th.
RAPTOR migration is under way with migrating raptors being counted daily at
the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and at the
Carter Hill Observatory in Concord. Pack Monadnock has tallied more than
19,099 raptors since September 1st, and Carter Hill has counted over 8,435
raptors since September 1st. Be sure to stop by to help with the count!
