This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, March 5, 
2014.



A SPOTTED TOWHEE was spotted in Rye on January 25th, and has been seen many 
times since then. It was last reported on March 2nd. It has been seen 
foraging on the ground in the scrub on the corner nearest the traffic island 
at the intersection of Central Road and Route 1A. An EASTERN TOWHEE 
continues to be seen at a private residence in North Hampton.



A female KING EIDER, reported earlier this winter, was again seen off of 
Great Island Common in New Castle on March 2nd.



At least 3 SNOWY OWLS continued to be reported in New Hampshire during the 
past week including 1 along the coast in Rye, and 2 in the Hampton and 
Seabrook marsh area.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor, and an adult ICELAND GULL was 
seen at Rockingham Park in Salem, both on March 2nd.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was again seen behind the town hall in Surry on February 
26th. This bird was first reported on February 16th.



A flock of over 75 SNOW BUNTINGS was reported from East Alstead on February 
26th, a flock of 25 was seen in Hanover on February 25th, and a flock of 10 
was reported from Hampton on March 2nd.



A flock of 24 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen along the coast in North Hampton 
on March 2nd.



A BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen in coastal Rye on March 2nd.



Two male RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were seen at the Wilder Dam on the 
Connecticut River on February 27th and 28th.



11 LESSER SCAUP and 30 HOODED MERGANSERS were seen on Lake Opechee in 
Laconia on February 24th, and a RING-NECKED DUCK was seen at Mine’s Falls 
Park in Nashua on March 2nd.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Hampton Marsh on March 2nd.



A BALD EAGLE was seen already incubating on a nest in New Castle on March 
2nd.



A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Rye on March 2nd.



A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Gilmanton, and 1 was seen in Concord, both on 
March 2nd.



At least 1 AMERICAN PIPIT was seen in coastal Rye on March 2nd.



An early-returning KILLDEER was seen in Hampton Harbor on March 2nd.



A GRAY CATBIRD was seen in Stratham on February 25th.



A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in North Hampton on March 2nd, and 1 was seen in 
Newmarket on February 25th.



Several small flocks of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were reported during the past 
week.



A NORTHERN FLICKER was seen in Bedford on February 27th.



A BELTED KINGFISHER was seen in Manchester on February 28th.



A flock of 50 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, 20 COMMON GRACKLES, and 5 BROWN-HEADED 
COWBIRDS was tallied in Greenland on March 2nd, and a flock of 11 
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS was reported from Lyme on February 26th. There were 
also a few scattered reports of small numbers of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS 
during the past week – a harbinger of spring!
