Well, we added an unexpected species to the "nested in the yard" list
over the weekend. As we sat on the patio eating our dinner on Saturday,
a female Common Merganser circled us a few times and flew into a hole in
one of our maple trees about 10 yards from the patio. We'd seen a pair
circling the house a few times over the last couple of weeks, but I had
no idea that they'd nested in such an obvious spot. It'll be
interesting to see what happens, since the nearest open water is some
distance. I guess they'll have a bit of a trek in front of them.
