This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for January 29, 2007 covering the period
January 22 - 28, 2007.

 

            Highlights this week include a NORTHERN SHOVELER spotted in
Brattleboro on the Connecticut River on 1/24, two HARLEQUIN DUCKS seen at
Shelburne Point on 1/27, a HERMIT THRUSH discovered at VINS in Quechee on
1/26, a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and 3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS spotted at
Moose Bog, a female COMMON YELLOWTHROAT observed in Burlington on 1/25 and
confirmed breeding of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Moose Bog on 1/23.

 

            A pair of LESSER SCAUP was spotted among a large group of COMMON
MERGANSERS and COMMON GOLDENEYES in Shelburne Bay on 1/24.

 

            Many NORTHERN HARRIERS were seen this week, including unusual
sightings in Weston and West Rutland Marsh.

 

            Three SHORT-EARED OWLS were observed along Gage Road in Addison
on 1/22.

 

            A BELTED KINGFISHER was seen in Danby on 1/22 and one was heard
in Bristol on 1/23.

 

            RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were present in Pownal and Shaftsbury
this week.  A male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen near Moose Bog on 1/26 and
1/28.  One female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen near Moose Bog on 1/26
and 3 females were seen on along South America Pond Road near Moose Bog on
1/28.  One lucky birder witnessed a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and a female
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER feeding within 30 feet of one another at Moose Bog
on 1/26.

 

            NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings occurred in Waitsfield, West Rutland
Marsh, Shelburne, Brattleboro Retreat Meadows and Shelburne Bay. 

 

            CAROLINA WRENS were observed in Saxton's River, Williston,
Milton, Rutland and Shaftsbury.

 

            A female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL carrying nesting material on
1/23 confirmed that this species is breeding at Moose Bog.
