This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, March 9th, 2015.



A juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was discovered near the public boat launch 
at Adams Point in Durham on November 10th. It has been seen numerous times 
since then, and was last reported on March 8th.



A SNOWY OWL was reported from Langdon on March 2nd, but has not been 
relocated.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Hinsdale on March 8th.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on March 8th.



3 ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on 
March 8th, and an ICELAND GULL was seen in Arms Park in Manchester on the 
6th.



4 RAZORBILLS and 7 BLACK GUILLEMOTS were seen along the coast on March 8th.



65 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were tallied along the coast in Rye on March 8th.



A female HARLEQUIN DUCK continues to be seen along the coast in Rye near 
Concord Point and was last reported on March 8th.



5 BARROW’S GOLDENEYES and over 50 COMMON GOLDENEYES were tallied on the 
Merrimack River in Manchester in the vicinity of the Granite Street bridge 
on March 3rd and again on the 8th.



2 male BARROW’S GOLDENEYES and 8 BALD EAGLES were reported from the 
Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 8th.



A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, and 5 GADWALL were reported from Rye Harbor on 
March 9th.



A LONG-TAILED DUCK was reported on several different days on the Merrimack 
River in Manchester from above the Amoskeag Fishways dam, and at least 4 
GREAT COMORANTS were seen on the Merrimack River in Manchester during the 
past week.



Several RED CROSSBILLS were reported from Hancock on March 4th.



BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included flocks of 20 in 
Newport on March 3rd, 200 in New London on the 4th, 80 in Northwood on the 
5th, 120 in Dublin on the 5th, 200 in Lyme on the 5th, 39 in Hollis on the 
6th, 80 in Antrim on the 9th, and flocks of 43 and 21 in Orford on the 3rd. 
These flocks were seen mainly foraging on ornamental fruit tress, or resting 
nearby.



A flock of 110 COMMON REDPOLLS and a flock of 9 EVENING GROSBEAKS were 
reported from birdfeeders in Jefferson on March 4th.



A flock of 40 COMMON REDPOLLS was seen in Salem on March 3rd, a flock of 10 
was reported from Enfield Center on the 5th, and a flock of 6 was reported 
from Chatham on the 9th.



A flock of 6 EVENING GROSBEAKS was seen in Milan on March 8th.



5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported from Rye Harbor State Park on March 9th.



4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 100 HORNED LARKS were reported from the Agway 
parking lot in Walpole on March 7th, and 5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, 8 SNOW 
BUNTINGS, and 200 HORNED LARKS were reported from the same location on March 
3rd.



A flock of 50 HORNED LARKS, 3 GREATER SCAUP, and 2 LESSER SCAUP were 
reported from the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on March 5th. A 
NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen here on the 8th.



A MERLIN was seen in Nashua on March 4th. A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS was 
seen in Concord on the 6th, 1 was seen in Hampton on the 8th, and 1 was seen 
in Salem on the 4th.



A GREAT BLUE HERON was seen in Nashua on March 9th.



There were a number of TURKEY VULTURE sightings during the past week, mainly 
seen over major highways as these scavengers searched for road-killed 
animals. Sightings were reported from Manchester, Nashua, Henniker, 
Hampstead, Windham, and Amherst.



A few early returning RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were reported from southern 
counties during the past week, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD was reported from 
Barrington on March 5th, where it has been seen visiting birdfeeders since 
December.



3 GRAY JAYS were seen on Mount Carrigain in the White Mountains on March 
7th.



FISH CROW sightings during the past week included 2 in Manchester on March 
8th, a flock of 10 in Nashua on the 4th, 5 in Kingston on the 9th, and 10 in 
Salem on the 4th.



Sightings from during the past week of owl species that breed in New 
Hampshire included: EASTERN SCREECH OWLS in Hollis, Nashua, and Rye, 
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS in Merrimack and Hancock, BARRED OWLS in Ashland and 
Orford, and several GREAT HORNED OWLS from multiple locations. Owls are busy 
courting and starting to nest during this time of the year.
