Today at dusk, near the base of Oak Hill in Hanover (Storr's Pond Rec.
Area), we flushed 1, then 2 more apparent:
  Northern Saw-whet Owls!

Alerted by a loud screech within a fairly dense white pine tree (~20'
tall?), the first bird flew out with rapid wingbeats, flying like a
small woodcock. With failing light and such rapid flight I wasn't able
to observe color very well. Then another short screech, and 2 more birds
flew out and away.

The screech was unlike any audio clips we can find (e.g., Stokes, BNA),
and since I was with a bunch of cross country skiers, the calls were
almost certainly alarm calls.

I'll keep checking the location, in hopes that they may stay around
until the CBC.

Spencer Hardy, Norwich
