This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, December 29th, 
2014.



2 SNOWY OWLS were seen in the vicinity of the Manchester airport on December 
15th, and at least 1 was still present on the 23rd, and 28th. The best place 
to look for the owls is in the parking area of the Aviation Museum located 
on the east side of the airport on Navigator Road, or at the circle off 
Delta Drive near Harvey Road. Do not park on the perimeter road on the edge 
of the airport, or security will ask you to leave.



A SNOWY OWL was seen several times during the past week at Hampton Beach 
State Park and another was seen several times during the past week at Ragged 
Neck and Awcomin Marsh in Rye. Both owls were last reported on December 
28th.



A SNOWY OWL was seen at the Pease International Tradeport from Short Road in 
Newington on December 28th.



A dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen in the area along Route 63 just 
north of the intersection with Goodrums Crossroad in Westmoreland on 
December 22nd.



A dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen in the area of Sawyer Farm on River 
Road in Walpole on December 28th.



A light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at Awcomin Marsh in Rye on December 
26th.



A female KING EIDER was reported from just north of the jetty at Hampton 
Beach State Park on December 28th.



A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, 80 COMMON GOLDENEYE, a SNOW GOOSE, 2 LONG-TAILED 
DUCKS, 5 LESSER SCAUP, and 11 NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen above and below the 
Vernon Dam in Hinsdale during the past week.



7 RUDDY DUCKS were seen on Big Island Pond and 12 BUFFLEHEADS were seen on 
Sunset Lake, all in Hampstead on December 25th.



A male NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen at Philbrick Marsh in North Hampton on 
December 28th.



5 RAZORBILLS were seen from Pulpit Rocks in Rye on December 28th.



A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and an ICELAND GULL were seen at North Hampton 
State Beach on December 23rd.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor on 
December 26th.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at Great Island Common in New Castle on December 
28th.



A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was seen off of Little Boar’s Head in North Hampton 
on December 23rd.



115 BONAPARTE’S GULLS were tallied in Hampton Harbor on December 26th.



9 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from Smith Bridge in Plymouth on December 
23rd.



A flock of 10 COMMON REDPOLLS was reported from Northern Drive in Amherst on 
December 26th.



4 EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported from Durham on December 20th.



A late-migrating adult male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was seen and 
photographed in Hancock on December 26th.



A late-migrating PINE WARBLER was reported from Ponemah Bog in Amherst on 
December 26th.



A late-migrating YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen in West Lebanon on December 
24th.



A late-migrating BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen and photographed in Exeter on 
December 24th.



An immature WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and a flock of 70 HORNED LARKS were seen 
in fields located west and south of the Transfer Station on North
River Road in Milford on December 27th.



A NORTHERN HARRIER was seen in Hollis on December 24th.



3 TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Exeter, and 1 was seen in Manchester on, all 
on December 25th. Nothing like a Christmas Vulture to brighten your spirits!



3 COMMON GRACKLES were seen in Lee on December 25th, and a RED-WINGED 
BLACKBIRD was seen in Milford on the 27th.



Highlights of the Littleton Christmas Bird Count, held on December 21st, 
included: a HOARY REDPOLL, 87 COMMON REDPOLLS, 3 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 2 SNOW 
BUNTINGS, 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS, 2 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, a YELLOW-BELLIED 
SAPSUCKER, and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.



Highlights of the Pittsburg Christmas Bird Count, held on December 22nd, 
included: 6 BALD EAGLES, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 24 GRAY JAYS, 34 BOREAL 
CHICKADEES, a SNOW BUNTING, 22 PINE GROSBEAKS, a RED CROSSBILL, 41 COMMON 
REDPOLLS, and 31 EVENING GROSBEAKS.



Highlights of the Crawford Notch Christmas Bird Count, held on December 
21st, included: 30 SNOW GEESE, a SPRUCE GROUSE, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 
a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 10 GRAY JAYS, 15 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 6 PINE 
GROSBEAKS, and 27 COMMON REDPOLLS.



Join the 100-Year-Old Tradition and Have Fun with NH Audubon’s Christmas 
Bird Count! Counts are scheduled for December 13, 2014 through January 3, 
2015. Those interested in participating in this fun winter activity will 
find the schedule and coordinator contact info available online at 
nhbirdrecords.org. A map of all New Hampshire count circles is also 
available online.
