This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, October 28th,
2009.
An immature RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was discovered coming regularly to a feeder
at a private residence in Hollis at least as early as October 21st, and was
last reported visiting the feeder on the 27th.
A SNOWY OWL was reported from Sullivan on October 25th.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen on Island Path in Hampton on October
25th.
3 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 5 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 38 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 11 GREATER
SCAUP, 95 SURF SCOTERS, 52 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 10 BLACK SCOTERS, 8
LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, 101 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 72
RED-THROATED LOONS, 55 COMMON LOONS, a GREATER SHEARWATER, a SOOTY
SHEARWATER, a MANX SHEARWATER, 352 NORTHERN GANNETS, 1,295 DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, and 11 LAUGHING GULLS were highlights
of migrating birds seen from Ragged Neck in Rye during the coastal storm
that took place on October 24th.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and a PRAIRIE WARBLER were seen at Odiorne Point
State Park in Rye on October 25th.
2 ICELAND GULLS, 16 SNOW BUNTINGS, and an AMERICAN WIGEON were seen at the
Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on October 24th.
7 SNOW GEESE were seen among over 200 CANADA GEESE in fields in East Conway
on October 22nd.
7 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were seen in Henry's Pool
adjacent to Hampton Marsh near the intersection of Routes 1A and 101E, and
17 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen at Ragged Neck in Rye, all on October
24th.
A PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 4 WILSON'S SNIPE, and 45 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at
Morrill Farm in Penacook on October 25th.
3 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were seen at Ponemah Bog In Amherst on October 23rd.
2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and 2 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen
at Great Meadows and the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Charlestown on
October 23rd.
A pair of GADWALL was seen in a pond along RoLLerCoaSTer Road in Laconia on
October 21st, and a single GADWALL was seen in Derry on the 22nd.
5 LESSER SCAUP were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on October
23rd.
A BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 21 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and 9 PIED-BILLED GREBES were seen
in Hinsdale along the Connecticut River on October 23rd.
60 BLACK SCOTERS, and 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen on Cherry Pond in
Jefferson, and 78 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on the Connecticut River in
Walpole, all on October 23rd. 6 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on Turtle Pond in
Concord on October 24th. 20 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on Powdermill Pond in
Hancock on October 26th. 2 BLACK SCOTERS, 2 SURF SCOTERS, and 6 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS were seen on Dublin Lake on October 24th.
14 SURF SCOTERS, 39 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 30 BLACK SCOTERS, and a
LONG-TAILED DUCK were seen on Spofford Lake in Chesterfield on October 23rd.
3 BLACK SCOTERS, and a LONG-TAILED DUCK were seen on Lake Massabesic in
Auburn on October 25th and 8 LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen here on the 26th. A
LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen on the Connecticut River in Hanover on October
24th.
25 AMERICAN COOTS, 10 PIED-BILLED GREBES, and over 90 RING-NECKED DUCKS were
seen on Powwow Pond in Kingston on October 22nd. 16 AMERICAN COOTS, 10
PIED-BILLED GREBES, and 2 RUDDY DUCKS were seen were on the 26th. 2 RUDDY
DUCKS were seen on Powderhouse Pond in Exeter on October 27th.
81 RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen on Tolman Pond in Nelson on October 24th.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER were reported from Chatham on
October 22nd.
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen in Ashland on October 25th.
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE, an EVENING GROSBEAK, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 6 AMERICAN
PIPITS, and 7 PALM WARBLERS were seen at the Old Mill Road Wildlife
Management Area in Lee on October 23rd.
A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was seen in Hampton, and an INDIGO BUNTING was seen in
Greenland on October 25th.
HAWK migration is under way with 6,735 raptors, including 50 BALD EAGLES, 6
GOLDEN EAGLES, and 30 PEREGRINE FALCONS reported from the Pack Monadnock
Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough since September 1st. The
biggest single-day counts to date were 2,129 raptors on September 16th, and
715 raptors on the 21st. NH Audubon is again operating a second raptor
observatory at Carter Hill Orchard in Concord, and its biggest single day
was also on September 16th with over 300 raptors. Be sure to visit both
observatories to help out with the count - this Saturday will be the last
official count day.
