Today Ed Hack and I looked for birds in eastern Windsor County, VT,
along a Route 5 corridor from Lake Runnemede in the town of Windsor
north to the Pompy area in the town of Norwich. Among the highlights
were 1) a male Green-winged Teal on the NH side of the Connecticut
River opposite the mouth of the Ompompanoosuc River, 2) 2 male
American Wigeons in the Connecticut River south of Ledyard Bridge, 3)
a male Greater Scaup (identified by notable white extending onto the
outer wings as revealed during a stretching of the wings) in the
Connecticut River south of Ledyard Bridge, 4) a Great Blue Heron at
Lake Runnemede, and 5) a unusually large flock of 27 Turkey Vultures
over the village section of Wilder. Other waterfowl species
encountered along our route included Canada Geese, Wood Ducks,
Mallards, Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded and Common Mergansers. The only
Eastern Phoebe detected today was at the Kilowatt South Park in Wilder.
