This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for March 19, 2007 covering the period
March 12 - March 18, 2007.

 

            Highlights this week include a REDHEAD on Grand Isle 3/12, a
MERLIN in Danby 3/17 and an early AMERICAN PIPIT above Vernon Dam on 3/18.

 

The first GREAT BLUE HERON was seen in West Rutland Marsh on 3/15.  TURKEY
VULTURE sightings occurred in South Burlington, Colchester, Williston,
Bristol and Georgia this week.  

 

Several pairs of WOOD DUCKS were spotted in flooded fields off Sykes Avenue
in White River Junction on 3/15 and 2 were observed at Herrick's Cove on
3/18.  A GADWALL was seen in McNeil Cove at the Charlotte Ferry dock on
3/16.  Four AMERICAN WIGEONS were observed in Grand Isle on 3/16 and one was
observed in South Burlington on that date as well.  NORTHERN PINTAILS were
present in Vernon (4) near the dam on 3/12, off Grand Isle (4) on 3/16 and
in South Burlington on 3/16.  The first GREEN-WINGED TEAL (4) of the season
were seen below Vernon Dam on 3/18.  Eight RING-NECKED DUCKS were sighted in
Vernon on 3/12 and again on 3/18 as well as 6 in Charlotte on 3/16.  Five
BUFFLEHEAD were spotted in Charlotte on 3/16. Two MUTE SWANS were seen in
Vernon on 3/12.

 

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was spotted in Waterbury on 3/16.  A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
was seen in Rutland on 3/13.  There were many RED-TAILED HAWK sightings this
week.  A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS was spotted on Mt. Horrid in Rochester on
3/12.

 

Several more KILLDEER returned to Vermont this week, with sightings
occurring in Pownal, South Burlington, Danby, Dead Creek and West Rutland
Marsh.  

 

The season's first AMERICAN WOODCOCK sighting took place in White River
Junction on 3/16.

 

The second sighting of a BELTED KINGFISHER this spring occurred in Danby on
3/17.

 

RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were seen in Pownal, Dorset, Manchester Center and
Milton this week.

 

The first reported EASTERN PHOEBES of the season were seen at Vernon Dam on
3/18.

 

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted in West Rutland Marsh on 3/15 and 3/16.

 

Three TREE SWALLOWS, the first reported this spring, were seen at Vernon Dam
on 3/18.

 

CAROLINA WRENS were seen and/or heard in Middlebury, Brattleboro, East
Dorset, West Rutland Marsh, Proctor and Westminster this week.

 

SONG SPARROWS returned to Westminster, South Newfane, East Dorset, Rutland
Town, Shoreham, Rochester, Saxton's River, Danby and West Rutland Marsh.

 

The first EASTERN MEADOWLARK sighting of the season took place in East
Dorset on 3/15.

 

There were reports of COMMON GRACKLES from all over the state, confirming
their return this week.

 

BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS are back in Brookfield and Rutland.

 

A male RED CROSSBILL was seen in Victory Bog on 3/14.
