This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 13th,
2008.
A possible GYRFALCON was sighted hunting WILD TURKEYS in the fields along
Kimball Hill Road in Whitefield on March 9th, but has not been relocated.
Sightings of waterfowl on Great Bay during the past week included a REDHEAD
on March 11th, 5 CANVASBACKS and 2 EURASIAN WIGEONS on the 10th, and 8
NORTHERN PINTAILS, 25 AMERICAN WIGEON and over 1,000 GREATER SCAUP on the
11th.
2 CANVASBACKS were seen on Powwow Pond in Kingston on March 11, and 8
NORTHERN PINTAILS were seen in flooded farm fields along Newington Road in
Greenland on the 8th.
6 CANVASBACKS, a LESSER SCAUP, 12 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL were
seen in Hinsdale, above and below dam on the Connecticut River on March
11th, and 120 COMMON GOLDENEYES were seen here on the 10th.
A pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYES was seen on the Merrimack River at Sewall's
Falls in Concord on March 11th, and a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen on
the coast just south of Great Boar's Head in Hampton on the 8th.
Good numbers of waterfowl of more commonly seen species have also been
reported during the past week, including RING-NECKED DUCKS, HOODED and
COMMON MERGANSERS, AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS, a few inland BUFFLEHEADS,
and some large flocks of CANADA GEESE.
Single NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen in East Kingston, Kingston, and Greenland
during the past week.
PINE GROSBEAK sightings during the past week came from Bedford, Whitefield,
Litchfield, Hanover, Enfield Center, Jefferson, and Penacook.
BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included 46 in Sutton on
March 12th, 55 in Chester on the 12th, 100 in Lyme on the 9th, 170 behind
the Ray School in Hanover on the 8th, a large flock near the Lebanon Library
on the 9th, and several seen in mixed flocks with CEDAR WAXWINGS in Ashland,
Penacook, Concord, and Manchester.
A few large flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS are still being reported from north of
the White Mountains, including a flock of 170 from Jefferson on March 12th.
A flock of 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported from Jefferson on March 12th,
and a flock of 27 was reported from Gilsum on the 9th.
A flock of 75 HORNED LARKS continues to be seen near Runnymede Farm in North
Hampton, and a small flock has been seen several times in Walpole.
AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were reported from Bethlehem, North Walpole, Hampton
Falls, and Rye during the past week, as well as a few KILLDEER.
Other early-returning migrants during the past week included many sightings
of RED- WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES, as well as scattered TURKEY
VULTURES from locations mainly south of Concord.
A flock of 11 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS was reported from Gilsum on March 12th.
A pair of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, and 2 GRAY JAYS were reported from the
Crawford Path in Crawford Notch on March 12th.
