On this morning's bird walk arranged by the Milton Frye Nature Area
Committee and held in the Norwich nature area, about 16 participants
found 33 species of birds. Among birds of interest were a Brown
Creeper moving almost horizontally along and around a fallen trunk,
nesting Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds, a singing Red-eyed Vireo,
and 11 species of warblers (including a singing Northern Parula, a
female Black-throated Blue, a singing Black-throated Green, and a
singing Blackburnian), Nice views were obtained of some colorful
spring birds including Chestnut-sided Warblers, American Redstarts, a
male Scarlet Tanager, and Baltimore Orioles.

Several participants then continued on an optional 90 minute extension
bird trip northward in Norwich along the Connecticut River and onto
Campbell Flats. Among 31 bird species thus found were a flying
immature Bald Eagle at Pompy, a flying American Kestrel near Pompy
Farms, Killdeer, Semipalmated Plover, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs,
and a Spotted Sandpiper (shorebirds all at Pompy), Eastern Kingbirds,
and a few Warbling Vireos.
