This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for April 17, covering the period April
10-16, 2009.  

 

The birding highlights of the week include a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW (a first
state record) sighted in Orwell on 4/13 and last reported there on 4/16, two
BLACK VULTURES (1 in Pittsford on 4/10 and 1 I New Haven on 4/12) and three
CASPIAN TERNS (1 at Shelburne Bay on 4/10 and 2 on Grand Isle on 4/11).

 

Four SANDHILL CRANES were seen at several different times on 4/11 at or near
Bristol Pond.

 

MERLINS were spotted at North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier (1 on
4/16), Wilder Dam (2 on 4/10), West Rutland Marsh (1 on 4/12), South
Starksboro (2 on 4/10), Burlington (1 on 4/14) and Huntington (1 seen
several times over the past two weeks).

 

The season's first reports of VIRGINIA RAILS came from West Rutland Marsh (2
on 4/10) and just north of Rutland (1 on 4/15).

 

A pair of FISH CROWS was seen flying across the Connecticut River towards
White River Junction on 4/15.

 

The first ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS made an appearance in Putney (2 on 4/10) and
Grand Isle (1 on 4/14).

 

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Starksboro (37 on 4/12) and Burlington (50 on
4/14). 

 

A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was observed in Woodstock on 4/11.  The season's
first PINE WARBLER was spotted in Norwich on 4/16 and the first PALM WARBLER
of the season was seen in Brattleboro on 4/12.

 

The first SCARLET TANAGER of the year was seen in Bennington on 4/16.
