This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for March 6, covering the period
February 27 - March 5, 2009.
The first four TURKEY VULTURES of the season were seen in South Burlington
(2/26), West Brattleboro (2/28), Dead Creek WMA (3/1) and Colchester (3/5).
An AMERICAN WIGEON was seen at McNeil Cove in Charlotte on 3/3. On 2/27 a
GREATER SCAUP was observed at the Grand Isle ferry dock. On 3/1 nine LESSER
SCAUP were spotted at McNeil Cove in Charlotte. A pair of HOODED MERGANSERS
was seen at Meach Cove in Shelburne on 3/1. A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was
observed at the Grand Isle ferry dock on 2/27 and at Converse Bay in
Charlotte on 3/1. Seventeen RING-NECKED DUCKS were spotted at Shelburne
Town Beach on 2/28 and 21 were seen at Meach Cove in Shelburne on 3/1.
A NORTHERN HARRIER was spotted in Charlotte on 3/1 and on 3/3. A
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was sighted at Meach Cove on 3/1. A PEREGRINE FALCON was
sighted in Moretown and Mt. Horrid on 2/28.
Two juvenile ICELAND GULLS were seen in Charlotte on 3/1 and 1 was seen at
Town Farm Bay in Charlotte on 3/3 along with three GLAUCOUS GULLS.
A SNOWY OWL was last seen and reported in Whiting on 2/28. A SNOWY OWL was
observed perching on a roof top on Crispin Drive in South Burlington on 3/3,
from which vantage point he caught three rodents.
A BELTED KINGFISHER was present at Meach Cove in Shelburne on 3/3.
AMERICAN ROBIN sightings are increasing, with the largest flock (80) seen in
Saxton's River on 3/2.
There were 16 sightings of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS this week, with the largest
flocks reported from Brattleboro (400+), West Brattleboro (275), Middlebury
(180), Rutland (175) and Shelburne Town Beach (150). A few CEDAR WAXWINGS
were also present.
There was a report of a very early YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Chittenden on
3/2.
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were sighted all over the state this week, with the
largest flock (75) seen in Tinmouth.
The first COMMON GRACKLE of the year was seen in Danby on 2/28.
One PINE GROSBEAK was spotted in Canaan on 2/28.
There were several sightings of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS this week, including
a small flock in Poultney (3/3), Shelburne (3 on 3/3), Waitsfield (1 on
3/2), Westminster (1 on 3/1) and Porter's Point area of Colchester (1 on
2/28).
Large sized flocks of EVENING GROSBEAKS were present on three consecutive
days in South Starksboro this week (105 on 3/2, 75 on 3/1 and 60 on 2/28).
