This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, June 26th,
2008.
3 MISSISSIPPI KITES are regularly being seen in Newmarket. There is a pair
that is nesting, and one additional bird is being seen in the same area. To
see the birds, take Route 152 (South Main Street) west from the center of
Newmarket. You will see the High School on the left (south) side of the
road. Park at the High School and walk west down the street. Do not park in
driveways, or along Route 152. The KITES have been seen flying and landing
in the tops of trees between Maplecrest and Pond Streets. This is a
residential neighborhood, and visiting birders should respect the rights of
property owners. Please do not walk on private property, talk and laugh
loudly early in the morning, or block residents from using the sidewalk.
Also, take care not to alarm the birds. Do not play recordings, stand under
the nest, or harass the birds in any way.
A first-summer BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen at Rye Ledge in Rye on June 23rd.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen on private property in Dover on June 23rd.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER nest has been reported during the past week at the
Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson. The nest is at an inaccessible
location but is visible from the viewing platform at Little Cherry Pond with
the aid of a scope.
A singing CERULEAN WARBLER was reported from the Middle Mountain Trail at
Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham on June 23rd, and one was reported from
Strafford on June 25th.
A MERLIN was reported from Hooksett on June 19th.
Coastal sightings during the past week include ROSEATE TERNS, NORTHERN
GANNETS, and WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS.
BICKNELL'S THRUSHES were reported from Mount Washington and Mount Pierce in
the White Mountains during the past week.
Species reported by birders visiting Pittsburg during the past week included
WHIMBREL, GRAY JAY, BOREAL CHICKADEE, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER,
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, PALM WARBLER, LINCOLN'S SPARROW,
and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
The nesting pair of PIPING PLOVERS on Hampton Beach have raised 3-chicks!
