When I went for walk today (without my binoculars) in my
neighborhood in White River Jct, I was immediately aware of a bunch of
crows making a commotion. Checking it out I observed a medium sized hawk
facing me on a branch below the crows. The first thing I noticed about
it was that its chest was very light, buffy. THe next thing I noticed
(but did not see as clearly as I would have liked) was that it seemed to
have side burns. When I tried to move closer it flew off---away from
me---with very rapid wing beats. The wings appeared to be long and
narrow (in other words, not those of an accipiter). it's alarm call was
a shrill and unfamilar ki-ki-ki.
This is a "hypothetical" sighting at best, but I think the bird was
a peregrine. Does anyone have any other thoughts?
