A couple of days ago a friend told me that a phoebe was attacking
chickadees at her feeder. My response was, "Yeah, right, why don't you
look up sharp shinned hawk?" However, she persisted in her conviction
that it was a phoebe. She subsequently sent me a couple of photos taken
on her cell phone. The pictures are not great, but they have convinced
me that the bird, which was present on Jan 10 and again on Jan 12, was
indeed a phoebe. This seems to me to be a remarkable date. I have seen a
phoebe in the Upper Valley in December but never in January.
