This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, November 13th, 
2017.



A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on November 9th.



4 GOLDEN EAGLES were seen from the Carter Hill Raptor Migration Observatory 
in Concord on November 7th.



A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on November 8th, and 1 was seen on the 11th, both 
from the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and a 
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen here on the 7th.



Observers at the Carter Hill Raptor Migration Observatory in Concord saw 2 
SANDHILL CRANES on November 7th, 8 on the 8th, and 18 on the 11th, all 
migrating south. An injured SANDHILL CRANE was seen in Rollinsford on 
November 7th and 8th.



3 CATTLE EGRETS continue to be seen at Flint Farm in Milan, and another 
CATTLE EGRET was seen foraging in cornfields at Krif Road in Keene on the 
November 7th.



A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen from the summit of Pack Monadnock in 
Peterborough on November 11th.



A WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen in Hampton on November 12th.



A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on 
November 12th.



2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were seen at Great Bay Farm in Greenland on November 
9th and again on the 12th, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen here on the 9th, 
and 3 LINCOLN’S SPARROWS were seen here on the 12th.



3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at Hampton Beach State Park on November 12th.



14 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from Carter Hill in Concord on November 12th.



4 RED CROSSBILLS were seen at the summit of Pack Monadnock in Peterborough 
on November 12th.



A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen along the coast in Rye on November 11th, 
and an ICELAND GULL was seen at Hedgehog Pond in Salem on November 9th.



A GREAT EGRET was seen at Meadow Pond in Hampton on November 12th, and a 
LESSER YELLOWLEGS was seen here on the 7th.



2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen at World End Pond in Salem on November 7th.



4 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen on the coast on November 11th, and 2 
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were seen at Seabrook Beach on November 8th.



An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was seen in Sullivan on November 9th, and 2 were seen 
in Freedom on the 8th. 5 WILSON’S SNIPES were seen in Nashua on November 
12th.



2 BRANT were seen at Rye Harbor State Park on November 9th, and 1 was seen 
on Highland Lake in Stoddard on the 10th.



A BLACK SCOTER and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER were seen on Lake Sunapee on 
November 10th, and a RED-NECKED GREBE was seen at Goose Pond in Canaan on 
November 12th.



A GADWALL was seen at Eel Pond in Rye on November 11th, and a NORTHERN 
SHOVELER was seen here on the 10th.



11 RUDDY DUCKS were seen at Pickering Ponds in Rochester on November 11th.



A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was photographed in Rochester on November 7th.



A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Conway on November 7th.



A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen at Eel Pond in Rye on November 12th.



A TREE SWALLOW was seen in Rochester on November 13th.



A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on 
November 12th, and a BLUE-HEADED VIREO was seen in Pittsfield on the 13th.



Additional lingering songbirds reported during the past week included a 
YELLOW WARBLER in Hampton on November 11th, a TENNESEE WARBLER in New Castle 
on the 11th, a NORTHERN PARULA in Rye in the 11th, a BLACKPOLL WARBLER in 
Rye on the 11th, a PINE WARBLER in Rye on the 11th and 1 in Newton on the 
7th, a PALM WARBLER in Rye on the 11th, a MAGNOLIA WARBLER in Rochester on 
the 8th, and a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT in Keene on the 8th. Also, there were 
several reports of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GRAY CATBIRD, and HERMIT THRUSH 
during the past week.



A SPRUCE GROUSE was seen along Route 16 in Dummer near the Cambridge town 
line on November 7th.



A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen along the Little Cherry Pond trail at the 
Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on November 8th.



A flock of about 200 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS was seen in Plaistow on November 
9th.



Over 20,000 BLACKBIRDS were seen migrating south in Strafford on November 
11th.



RAPTOR migration monitoring at the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration 
Observatory in Peterborough, and at the Carter Hill Raptor Migration 
Observatory in Concord will be drawing to a close in mid-November. Pack 
Monadnock has reported 11,730 raptors and Carter Hill has reported 6,241 
raptors, all since September 1st. The most unusual raptor sightings during 
that time were 10 GOLDEN EAGLES and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. Thanks are due to 
the supporters of New Hampshire Audubon that make this important on-going 
research project possible, and to the observatory staff for their 
dedication, observation skills, people skills, and long hours during the 
2017 fall season!
