This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, August 17th,
2011.
An EARED GREBE was seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on
August 12th and 13th. Also present on the 12th was a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and
3 LEAST SANDPIPERS. The plant is gated and is open Monday through Friday
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is not open on weekends. Access is through
the front entrance and you must park in front of the office building and
check in with the staff before birding. Do not block the roads and do not
drive on the dikes. Be sure you are out of the plant before 2:45 p.m. so
that plant personnel do not have ask you to leave. It may be possible to
view the pond from the Pickering Ponds side. The trails at Pickering Ponds
are open on weekends during daylight hours.
Birders conducting a seawatch from the Ragged Neck portion of Rye Harbor
State Park on August 15th tallied: 3 MANX SHEARWATERS, 17 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS, 108 NORTHERN GANNETS, a SNOWY EGRET, 30 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS, 14 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 100 WHIMBRELS, 45 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 12
BONAPARTE'S GULLS, a BLACK TERN, a ROYAL TERN, 8 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 4
LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, and 12 unidentified JAEGERS.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from Pulpit Rocks in Rye on August 14th.
2 ROYAL TERNS were seen in Rye on August 11th.
2 FORSTER'S TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor on August 13th, and 1 was seen
along the coast on the 14th.
3 LEAST TERNS(an adult and 2 juveniles) were seen at Rye Harbor State Park
and later near Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on August 14th, and one was
seen in Meadow Pond in Hampton on August 13th.
A juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON, 63 GREAT EGRETS, and 33 SNOWY EGRETS were seen
in the marsh along Route 286 in Seabrook on August 13th.
4 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen in Hampton on August 13th.
A GREAT EGRET was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord on August 14th.
A SNOWY EGRET, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER were seen in
NH Audubon's Ponemah Bog Sanctuary on August 16th.
85 LAUGHING GULLS were seen moving north along the coast on August 14th, and
142 were seen moving south on the 15th.
Birders viewing coastal migration on August 14th reported: 14 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS, 42 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 15 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 3 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 88 SANDERLINGS, 5 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS,
236 "PEEPS"(small sandpipers), 6 ROSEATE TERNS, 32 COMMON TERNS, 244 TREE
SWALLOWS, and 85 BARN SWALLOWS
2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen in Hampton on August 13th.
A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen in Charlestown, and a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER
was seen in Walpole, both on August 15th.
A BLACK GUILLEMOT was reported from the coast on August 14th.
50 ROSEATE TERNS, 300 COMMON TERNS, and a WHIMBREL were all seen in Hampton
Harbor on August 13th.
3 FISH CROWS, over 65 BOBOLINKS, over 13 INDIGO BUNTINGS, and a BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER were all seen at the Strafford County Farm on August 12th.
A juvenile PURPLE MARTIN and over 2,000 TREE SWALLOWS were seen off Cross
Beach Road in Seabrook on August 13th.
4 EASTERN WOOD PEWEES, 5 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, a
MAGNOLIA WARBLER, a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 7 BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLERS, 5 PINE WARBLERS, 4 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, an AMERICAN REDSTART,
an OVENBIRD, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and 5 CANADA WARBLERS were reported from
a backyard in Webster on August 14th, and a WILSON'S WARBLER was reported
from Pillsbury State Park in Washington on August 13th.
A NORTHERN BOBWHITE was reported from near South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on
August 12th. NORTHERN BOBWHITES are released in various locations in the
state for hunting every year.
A RINGED TURTLE-DOVE was reported from Lincoln on August 14th. The bird had
a green band on one leg and is an escaped cage-bird.
