Under mostly overcast skies this morning a bird walk, organized by the
Milton Frye Nature Area Committee, began with a visit to the orchard
and then continued along one of the woodland trails. Eastern
Kingbirds, Tree Swallows, House Wren, Gray Catbirds, and a Yellow
Warbler were conspicuous around the orchard, and a Chimney Swift
passed overhead. Veery and Hermit Thrush were heard singing. Ten
species of warblers were detected at the nature area. The Black-
throated Green, Blackburnian, and Pine Warblers, Ovenbird, as well as
the Red-eyed Vireos, all of which are summer residents in the nature
area woodland, this morning provided notable song while remaining out
of sight.
After touring the nature area, several from the initial group of
participants continued to the area around Foley Park by the Ledyard
Bridge. One highlight in Foley Park was a Northern Mockingbird, the
first that any of the participants had seen in Norwich during 2010.
Among colorful birds well seen at Foley Park were American Redstarts
and Baltimore Orioles. Canada Goose and Mallard were the waterfowl
species found there.
Still later in the morning Ed Hack and I continued north in Norwich.
Additional species found at Pompy included 3 Turkey Vultures, 2 Wood
Ducks, a Red-tailed Hawk, a Solitary Sandpiper, and a Belted
Kingfisher. To the west of Pompy but still along Route 132, bordering
the northern shoreline of the Ompompanoosuc River, were a calling
Least Flycatcher and a singing Swamp Sparrow.
