Kyle Jones and I just spent over 30 minutes observing a group of 14 goldeneyes on the open water at Kilowatt North Park in Wilder. There are 2 adult male Commons mostly consorting by themselves and 12 other birds forming a fairly tight feeding flock, diving along the NH side over the shallows.

Two females with very yellow bills and (to us) more flattened crowns and steeper foreheads beg to be identified as Barrow’s, but ... we’re not quite confident enough to make the call, and neither of us have telephoto capabilities for diagnostic photos. It would be great if someone could get down here and obtain some photos that will enable a definitive ID.

Please share photos if you do! Other opinions of these birds—photos or not—are welcome. You really need a spotting scope for good looks.

Chris
