I have noticed a few times folks asking the list for directions to where
birds have been seen. I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone
that on Vermont eBird it is easy to get directions and more.
There are two ways in which you can obtain information about a sighting
from Vermont eBird. 1) If you use iGoogle you can use the eBird Google
Gadget. This shows you all rare birds entered into eBird by state and
there is a link that you can clikc on that will take you to a Google map
where you can get exact driving directions. To learn more about this
tool and how to use it, visit
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/Google_Gadget.html. 2) You can use
Jack Siler's eBird rarity map. This is a google map mashup and is
accessible at http://birdingonthe.net/gmaps/eBirdMap.html. 3) you can
use Vermont eBird directly. This give you the most information and
requires a few more steps. Here is how you would do it to see all the
reports for the Northern Hawk Owl.
a) go to Vermont eBird - View and Export Data
(http://ebird.org/ebird/vt/eBirdReports?cmd=Start)
b) click on maps
c) type in Northern Hawk Owl and click on continue
d) on the map click on the zoom tool and then draw a small square around
the button on the map near Eden to zoom in. Keep zooming in as far as
you need to.
e) There are several dots showing where people saw the owl. You can
click on any dot to get date, species and observer.

All of this only works if folks are contributing their sightings to
Vermont eBird. I thank all of you that eBird. For contributors, It also
shows how important it is to put in a location that is as accurate as
you can.
I hope you all find these and other eBird tools useful. Thanks for eBirding!

Kent
