Today Ed Hack and I looked for birds in southeastern Windsor County,
VT. Some highlights follow.
At Lake Runnemede in the town of Windsor, birds of special interest
included 31 Canada Geese, 5 American Black Ducks, a female Common
Merganser, a Belted Kingfisher, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, 60 American
Robins, 3 Red-winged Blackbirds, and a Common Grackle. Also by Lake
Runnemede was a diminutive Ermine (also called Short-tailed Weasel)
with a white winter pelage but black tip to the tail and carrying an
unfortunate deer mouse.
Two Carolina Wrens were seen together along Central Street in the
village section of Windsor. American Robins were found today in
numerous locations and appeared to be widely distributed throughout
the southeastern part of the county. Three Eastern Bluebirds were
along the Connecticut River near the Springfield Meadows. Two
additional female Common Mergansers were in the Connecticut River just
to the south of Hoyt's Landing in Springfield. An adult Bald Eagle was
seen in the Springfield area. Also in the Springfield area, a Great
Horned Owl was inconspicuously sitting on a nest and undoubtedly
incubating.
