This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, January 5th,
2011.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was reported from the vicinity of Sterling Place and
Putney Road in Bow on January 1st, has been seen every day since then, and
was last reported on the 5th. The bird has often been seen in a tall dead
birch tree visible from Sterling Place. The bird is being seen in a
residential area and if you look for it please remember to respect property
rights and individual privacy.
There was a report of a NORTHERN HAWK-OWL sitting on a power line located
west of the Public Service office on Route 25 in Meredith on January 4th.
A DOVEKIE that was first reported close to shore on the south side of Great
Boar's Head in Hampton on December 15th, has been seen numerous times since
then, but the last confirmed report was on the 27th. 3 RAZORBILLS were seen
from Great Island Common in New Castle on December 31st. A BLACK GUILLEMOT
was discovered in Rye Harbor on December 18th, and was still present January
1st.
A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE that was first reported close to shore on the south
side of Great Boar's Head in Hampton earlier in December has been seen
numerous times since then, and was most recently reported on January 1st. A
male and a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were seen on the Connecticut River in
Hinsdale on December 29th. A NORTHERN SHOVELER and a NORTHERN PINTAIL were
seen on South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on January 1st.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 ICELAND GULLS, a NORTHERN SHOVELER, and a
NOTHERN PINTAIL were all seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on
December 30th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at
Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always
open during daylight hours.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER has been visiting a bird feeder in North Sandwich
for the past two weeks and was last reported on January 2nd.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the Two Rivers Conservation Area in Epping,
and one was seen in Belmont, both on January 2nd.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE, 2 PINE GROSBEAKS, 60 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 53 EVENING
GROSBEAKS were reported from a private residence in Jefferson on January
3rd. A flock of 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported from North Barnstead Road
in Center Barnstead on January 1st.
A HOARY REDPOLL was seen with a flock of 65 COMMON REDPOLLS, another 150
COMMON REDPOLLS were counted elsewhere, and 42 SNOW BUNTINGS were tallied,
all on the Sandwich Christmas Bird Count on January 2nd.
A flock of 70 COMMON REDPOLLS with a possible HOARY REDPOLL mixed in was
seen at Hampton Beach State Park on January 5th, a flock of 32 COMMON
REDPOLLS was seen at the Millyard Technology Park in Nashua on the 2nd, and
a large flock of COMMON REDPOLLS was reported from Etna on December 29th.
A flock of 125 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen on Upper City Road in Pittsfield,
and a flock of 57 was reported from Birch Hill Road in Warner, all on
December 31st. A flock of 16 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen on Meredith Neck
Road in Meredith on December 30th, and a flock of 23 was seen in North
Conway on the 29th.
71 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD were
seen on the Laconia Christmas Bird Count on January 2nd.
150 SNOW BUNTINGS, 80 HORNED LARKS, and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW were seen in
Walpole on December 31st.
An AMERICAN PIPIT was seen on the coast in Rye on January 1st.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Nashua on January 2nd, and one was seen in
Concord on December 30th. A MERLIN was reported from Hollis on December
31st.
3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen on North River Road in Milford on January 2nd.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Nashua on January 2nd.
2 GRAY JAYS were reported from the Crawford Path in Crawford Notch on
January 1st.
4 BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen on Mount Squam on January 2nd.
There have been a few sightings of NORTHERN FLICKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER,
WINTER WREN, and CAROLINA WREN during the past week.
