This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, August 17th, 
2015.



At least 2 pairs of MISSISSIPPI KITES have nested in Newmarket this year and 
there is currently at least 1 youngster. The KITES have been reported on 
multiple occasions from Piscasssic Street, but the most recent reports were 
from Huckins Road in Newmarket, and Breakfast Hill Road in Greenland, both 
on August 16th.



3 SANDHILL CRANES continue to be seen in Monroe. The early season sightings 
were from behind the cemetery on the south side of Plains Road and east of 
Coppermine Road. Later season sightings were from the north side of Plains 
Road, in the fields behind the first farm on the left. These fields begin 
about 1/2 mile from Route. 135, and the birds have been seen in fields along 
Plains Road all the way to Coppermine Road. Be aware that large stands of 
trees and some buildings can sometimes block the view.



An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen in the salt marsh located on the west 
side of Route 1A and just south of Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, on 
August 13th.



2 juvenile LEAST BITTERNS were seen at World End Pond in Salem on August 
14th.



There were several reports of GREAT EGRETS from inland locations during the 
past week, including Newport, Merrimack, and Hooksett



9 LEAST TERNS were seen in coastal Hampton on August 15th.



Birders on the Granite State Whale Watch cruises out of Rye during the past 
week reported: a SOOTY SHEARWATER, 2 MANX SHEARWATERS, 9 GREAT SHEARWATERS, 
14 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 374 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, a LEACH’S STORM-PETREL, 
32 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 31 NORTHERN GANNETS, and a LAUGHING GULL.



Coastal shorebird sightings during the past week included a few WHIMBRELS, 
RUDDY TURNSTONES, and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.



A RED CROSSBILL was heard in Errol on August 9th.



A male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen at the Trudeau Road wetlands in 
Bethlehem on August 15th.



2 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were reported from Fowlers Mill Road in Tamworth 
on August 9th, and 1 was seen in Concord on the 15th.



A juvenile-plumaged NORTHERN HARRIER was reported from Surry on August 13th.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Sunapee during the past week.



A colony of 13 pairs of PURPLE MARTINS is nesting along Cross Beach Road in 
Seabrook and 20 individuals were observed on August 13th.



There were several sightings of small numbers of migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS 
during the past week.
