On Sunday 8/28 around 6:00 PM my neighbor and I saw a group of birds, at least 6, that were about the same wing shape as a swallow, but gray, much larger birds and the tail was wrong. We see Bank Swallows around here fairly often. They were clearly feeding on insects as a swallow would, but they were at a higher altitude than I would expect a swallow to feed. We were in Cornish about a mile from the river, under trees, no binoculars handy. There may have been more birds than we were able to see, they were gliding and doing small “dives” or swoops.

I spent some time Monday trying to ID the birds from shape, color and behavior, I came up with Mississippi Kite, but dismissed it. I’m not a very avid birder. Today I was thinking about the birds again and I wondered if any one else saw the flock. I thought to look at your list server, rare bird sighting. Now I’m sure they were Mississippi Kites.
