I just returned from a training session at the Minary Center at Squam Lake.
Besides the Loons and a close encounter with a bald eagle, a couple of us
encountered a curious call on a nite walk from far up a huge white pine. I
could' nt pick up eyes with my LED lite so we were uncertain if it were bird or
critter. We did some fascinating discovery and decided our nite noise in the
tree was a northern hawk owl. One of our collegues, who is a multi degreed
behavioral biologist, had her iPhone with an Ap for birds sounds. We played many
birds and critters and identified it exactly! The same iPhone had an Ap for a
flashlight and got a group out of . . well, the dark to make a long story short.
Fascinated by the technology we discovered an Ap for 'sonic insect control'
which includes your choice of distracting music in the background for humans. We
decided the later might come in handy on those nite walks since all the bats
seem to be dying.
