This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, March 19,
2014.
An immature GOLDEN EAGLE was seen hunting WILD TURKEYS in Plainfield on
March 17th.
A SNOWY OWL was reported from the Hampton area on March 18th, and one was
reported from Hudson on the13th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Hampton on March 12th, one was seen in Durham
on the 14th, and one was seen in Hinsdale on the 16th.
A female KING EIDER continues to be seen from the Great Island Common area
in New Castle and was last reported, along with 2 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, on
March 15th. A flock of 10 BRANT was seen here on the 18th
A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE has been seen repeatedly off of Great Boar’s Head
in Hampton during the past week. A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was also seen at
the Vernon Dam on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 16th, and a
female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE that has been seen repeatedly on the Merrimack
River in Concord during this past winter was again seen at Sewall’s Falls on
March 19th.
3 CANVASBACKS and a FISH CROW were reported on Great Bay from the Discovery
Center in Greenland on March 15th. There is still quite a lot of ice present
on Great Bay.
A grounded RED-THROATED LOON was found in Rochester on March 13th, and
successfully captured and released at the coast after passing a medical
checkup.
A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen on the Merrimack River in Nashua on March
15th.
5 GREATER SCAUP, 4 LESSER SCAUP a RED-NECKED GREBE, and 3 FISH CROWS were
all seen in the Tilton and Laconia area on March 15th.
An ICELAND GULL was seen at Field’s Grove in Nashua on March 15th, and an
ICELAND GULL and a GLAUCOUS GULL were seen in Hampton Harbor on the 12th.
2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and 70 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Hampton Beach State
Park on March 12th.
A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS is again nesting on the Brady-Sullivan Tower in
Manchester. They can be viewed via webcam at:

2 KILLDEER and 4 TURKEY VULTURES were seen at Great Bay Farm in Greenland on
March 15th. A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Laconia on March 18th, 2 were seen
in Hooksett on the 15th, 1 was seen in Hinsdale on the 16th, 1 was seen in
Lyme on the 19th, 1 was seen in Keene on the 19th, and 3 were seen in
Concord on the 16th.
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were reported from Exeter and Derry, a NORTHERN HARRIER
was tentatively reported from Conway, and an AMERICAN KESTREL was seen in
Walpole, all during the past week.
An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was seen and photographed in Nashua on March 13th.
A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in Exeter on March 14th.
A flock of 16 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS was seen in Kingston on March 13th.
2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were reported from the Pondicherry National
Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on March 19th.
Avian signs of spring during the past week included many reports of
blackbirds, and inland sightings of waterfowl.
