This is a reminder that on Wednesday December 20, 2017, Dr. Jason Hill is to speak on "Unlocking the Migration Mysteries of Two Grassland Bird Species: Grasshopper Sparrow and Upland Sandpiper". This illustrated program begins at 7:00 PM in the Mayer Room of the Howe Library in Hanover, NH, and is free and open to the public. Dr. Hill's talk is sponsored by the Mascoma Chapter of New Hampshire Audubon.  (This program was originally scheduled for Dec. 12 but, due to a winter storm at that time, will instead be presented on Dec. 20.)

The migration of birds has long been a mystery. Where do they go and how do they get there?  Grassland birds populations have undergone steady declines over the last half century due to agricultural industrialization and intensification on the breeding grounds. We know relatively little, however, about the fate of grassland birds on their wintering grounds. In a first, biologists at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies have been elucidating the migration and winter ecology of Grasshopper Sparrows and Upland Sandpipers with miniaturized tracking devices. Come learn about how these birds migrate and where they spend the winter--including a previously unknown wintering location for Upland Sandpipers.

Jason Hill is a conservation biologist with the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. Trained as a quantitative ecologist and ornithologist, Jason also pilots research into the ecology of Bicknell's Thrush and other montane wildlife.
