This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, November 20th,
2017.
A SNOWY OWL was seen in Stoddard on November 16th.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on November 15th, and 1 was seen on the 17th, both
from the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and an AMERICAN WIGEON were seen at the Carter Hill
Raptor Migration Observatory in Concord on November 14th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Route 116 in Jefferson on November 16th.
A SNOW GOOSE was seen in a field on Lyme on November 15th.
A very-late migrating TREE SWALLOW, and an ICELAND GULL were seen at the
Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on November 17th. The treatment plant
is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you
visit, please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so
that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on
the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located
east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
25 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and 7 RED CROSSBILLS were reported from the
summit of Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on November 15th.
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on
November 15th.
Lingering songbirds seen during the past week included a NASHVILLE WARBLER
in Nashua on the 14th, a BLACKPOLL WARBLER in Rye on the 15th, a PINE
WARBLER in Rochester on the 14th, and a PALM WARBLER in Rochester on the
14th. There were few reports of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GRAY CATBIRD, and
HERMIT THRUSH during the past week.
2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at Hampton Beach State Park on November 15th.
Small numbers of SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from scattered inland sites
during the past week.
3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen at Rye Harbor on November 15th, and a
PURPLE SANDPIPER was seen in Hampton on the 19th.
A GREAT EGRET was seen Hampton Marsh on November 18th.
3 GADWALL were seen in Exeter on November 19th.
RAPTOR migration monitoring at the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration
Observatory in Peterborough, and at the Carter Hill Raptor Migration
Observatory in Concord will be drawing to a close on November 20th. Pack
Monadnock has reported 11,788 raptors and Carter Hill has reported 6,274
raptors, all since September 1st. The most unusual raptor sightings during
that time were 12 GOLDEN EAGLES and 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. Thanks are due to
the supporters of New Hampshire Audubon that make this important on-going
research project possible, and to the observatory staff for their
dedication, observation skills, people skills, and long hours during the
2017 fall season!
